I've been wanting to blog about my whole labor and delivery experience since it happened and I've only now found the time to do so. Here goes! I had been set up to be induced on June 8th. But on June 1st we went in for my final Doctors appointment. Once again... I had high blood pressure. I was sent to OR emergency for more testing for preeclampsia. This time... results came back with cause for a little more concern. They decided since I was 37 weeks it was safe to keep me and induce me that day. We were moved to labor and delivery and we called all our family members and friends to let them know the babes were on the way. I was already dilated to a 2 so they were able to start me on pitocin right away, around 3:30 in the afternoon. Family and some close friends came up to hang out as I labored. Around 11:00 at night the contractions hadn't made much of a change and I was still very comfortable and hardly experiencing any pain. They decided to break "baby A's" water. Friends left at this time. Once "baby A's" water was broken the contractions came on a lot stronger!
(People who don't give any credit to moms who have a natural birth are so wrong. Props to all of them. I've always wanted to give birth naturally but wasn't given the option under all the circumstances of twins. But I wanted to experience as much as I could so that one day... when a third child comes along I'll have an idea of what I'm in for. And I'll be in for it!)
I contracted for about 2 1/2 hours without medication when I finally decided I'd take the epidural. At about 1:30 in the morning I was given my epidural and it truly was instant relief. I was finally able to fall asleep for a bit. I was woken up by a Doctor at about 4:00 in the morning and they told me I was completely dilated to a 10 and it was time to go to the Operating Room to deliver these babes! My family had stayed with us the entire night.. they are awesome. Dave called his mom and she immediately came up. It took awhile for them to prepare the operating room so we made our way in at about 5:00 in the morning. Not even a half hour into pushing I had two beautiful baby boys! How great. The rest of that day is kinda a blur now. Visitors came. Dave and I tried to sleep. We held our babies. Etc...
EASTON UPDATE: Thursday morning was the worst day of my life :( Easton was taken to the NICU. We went to see him and he was hooked up to all sorts of tubes and IVs. He was so irritable. It just made me so sad. They didn't know what was wrong with him. And actually, to this day still don't quite know. In a nutshell, he has some kind of an infection. They don't know what or where. He has gotten lots better since then. He's had much of his medications removed and is such a happier baby now :) Just recently though it was discovered that he has two dermoid cysts on his head. They are these weird large patches of fluid. It is being debated if they will be removed or not. Also, he has a little bit of palsy in his left cheek. When he cries his left cheek does not droop down along with his right cheek, it just hangs out. Soooo sad. And so crazy. I would have never thought one of these babes would have so many complications. I just hope that he will get 100% better and live a fully functioning life. That's all I want. We expect him to be home in a week from this Thursday :)
After 6 days in the hospital we were able to take Trey home and he's been great ever since. He is such a great baby. At least so far! He's always so content. If he cries we change his diaper, feed him, and he goes right back to sleep. Love it.
How insane it is to say I have two babies now. Parenthood is great. A huge change, a huge challenge, but honestly so rewarding. I've had several moms of twins who had to leave a baby in the NICU tell me that it's a blessing in disguise because you are able to adjust to one baby for awhile before you bring the second baby home. It's very true, but I'm ready for Easton to come home and be with his family :)
